February 17th, 8pm: The Works of Tokuhide Niimi
February 18th, 5:30pm: Diversification of Japanese Contemporary Music

For the 43rd season MFJ will present its third year of the Artist Residence Program to facilitate dialogue between composers, critics and music scholars from the US and Japan.

The Works of Tokuhide Niimi,will feature three of the composer’s pieces, including one new work commissioned by MFJ. The Momenta Quartet, the C4 Vocal Ensemble and other world-renowned New York-based musicians will perform these inspiring works. Diversification of Japanese Contemporary Music, is curated by Dr. Toshie Kakinuma and will feature new work by Japanese composers. The evening will include two world premieres of MFJ commissions written by Makiko Nishikaze and Mayu Masuda. Ms. Masuda’s new piece is written for voice and wagon, an ancient Japanese 6-string koto. Kayoko Nakagawa will perform this exciting new repertoire on this rare instrument.
